L to R: former State Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr.,  Precinct 1 Commissioner Sofia Benavides, Tax Assessor Tony Yzaguirre, County Judge Eddie Trevino and County Clerk Sylvia Garza-Perez

While the strongly-entrenched politicians pictured above celebrated the opening of a new Southmost Tax Office, we're reminded of the ease with which these folks often spend other people's money, that is, the taxpayers' hard-earned dollars.

A local blogger-for-hire, likely paid by the current tax assessor, Tony Yzaguirre, has questioned Tax Assessor candidate Eddie Garcia's concerns about $2,800,000 in tax dollars being used for the new building.

Now, we did venture down Sou
thmost Road today at 3:45 PM to get our own look at the newly-constructed tax office and there's no denying the beauty of the structure, featuring stone block, bricks, a steel roof and beautiful landscaping.

Yet, as beautiful as the nearly $3M facility is, not one additional penny of taxes has been collected as a result of its construction.

Actually, modern technology has made it possible to pay taxes online, rendering the old brick-and-mortar solutions obsolete and unnecessarily costly.

Once inside the building, we found at least four city employees along with one customer paying taxes. So, add the wages, benefits of these employees to the initial cost of the building, along with maintenance and utilities for as long as the building stands.

A friendly lady greeted us at the booth with a city administrator behind her, while a security guard stood just inside the door.  Next to a single customer paying taxes was another employee cleaning the glass shield at an empty payment booth.

Before the runoff election between 36 year incumbent Tony Yzaguirre and Eddie Garcia takes place May 28, with early voting May 20-24, Garcia is hopeful Yzaguirre will be willing to sit down with him in some sort of format; discussion, roundtable or debate, to give the voters a look at their different approaches to running the office.

Garcia has made it clear that, should he be elected, no current employees need fear for their jobs in the tax assessor/collector office, including several members of the Yzaguirre family.

Garcia simply wants to set a tone that emphasizes customer service while running the department efficiently and economically.

  1. Garcia never once mentions where customer service needs to be improved. Your own piece to imply it was a waste of taxpayer money to the people in Southmost a sub-office which means it was not needed for customer service. Well, it was. A lot of car titles go through the Southmost office. You cannot do a transfer of title online. People transfer title upon death. That can only be done upon death and presentation of the proper documentation. Also, Texas allows heirs to accept title after death. This requires potentially multiple notarized documents, which must be filed with the Tax Office. My office uses the Southmost Office on a regular basis. You did not do your homework on the function of the tax office. Also, has failed to give one example of bad service. Also, while it is easy to get your annual car registration at HEB, a lot of people still use the tax office. Just try and go in the last three days of the month or first three days of the month and you will find long lines.

    1. Thanks for the comment. There have been some customer service issues that will be addressed in a subsequent article.

  2. This was an opportunity for the Southmost people to go downtown. Reminds me of the past, people would go to downtown on important errands.

  3. Mr Yzzaguirre why is it that your compadres can get any property they want before it gets to the auction block. There is one specific realtor that gets all the properties and you know who that is. One of your compadres actually put a conversation between you and him on speaker phone regarding a certain property in Las Yescas he wanted and he got it. I’m sure the DA will catch up to you eventually. Need a car sticker $20 and you ve got one. That’s everyday business. I’m sorry but the current establishment has got to go. Should you manage to win the runoff watch out for your republican opponent.

  4. There's most definitely customer service issues that range from rudeness, slow service (employees just mingling while long lines), ans closed drive thru lanes (not enough personnel) to name a few. Go to website and take a look at poor/low reviews. Plus, Yzaguirre is never too be found, except now during election time.

  5. 8:47 P.M. and 10:25 PM are BS conclusory nonsense. As to 8:47, your lie is obvious to everyone who knows how the system works. The tax foreclosures are posted for everyone to see. You go to the courthouse steps and bid on any property you want. Really, only a handful sell. Those who do the auction because they are afraid of bold face lies about how the system works record the process on video. I have lost more than one bid, because I felt like the competitive buy would get too high. The houses are posted and sold for cash on the courthouse steps. Unlike in some states if you do not have enough money orders or cashier checks to pay then you do not get it. The fraud is the highest bidder will not have enough to pay. Everyone who may have bid on the house leaves except one person. The house then goes to the next highest bidder which is below what those who already left had bid. I wait to insure the house sells. I have seen this scam enough times. The tax office has nothing to do with the fraud. Instead of posting the verifiable lies. why not learn how the process actually works and the fraud in the bidding process. My office does a lot of work at the tax office. They are helpful, especially with people wanting to transfer property without going through the probate process. I have never seen or heard anyone complain. I am certain people have complained about things like the long lines at the end and beginning of the month. Yes, there are long lines at the beginning and end of the month. The fact people wait until the last minute to transfer title or renew their title is not the fault of the tax office or mismanagement. I do not believe you are taking penny for your clear bias, but it is obvious you have an axe to grind with Tony.

  6. I like Tony Yzaguirre. He knows how to get people to like him. Some of you know how he does it. I am not going to disclose it here. Hint: he appreciates his people.

Really all properties being sold at the footsteps of the courthouse! When was the last time you went there? Guess you haven't heard of the online sales or do you reach out to Menchaca for exclusive sales. Hope when the new tax assessor collector gets elected there's a complete external audit. I'm sure there's gonna be plenty inside the closet they missed in 2015. The day is coming and like dominoes they will fall. It's a matter of time. Could that be why some county officials are really pushing for Tony the Magician 🎩. Time for change is now.
I'm sure someone is losing sleep. Time will tell!
Let's do this Cameron County go out and vote for change. Let the politicians know We The People are in charge!
