Deion Sanders with his mother, Connie Knight

Today's football challenge with Coach Prime's Colorado Buffaloes is not Colorado State Coach Jay Norvell's first rodeo.

Norvell's coached at Northern Iowa, the Indianpolis Colts, not to mention the Universities of Nebraska, Oklahoma and Nevada.

That's why some commentators insist that Norvell's "my momma is better than your momma" insinuation aimed at Deion Sanders was an intentional ploy.

"My momma always told me to remove my hat and shades when talking to grownups" was a direct missile aimed at Coach Prime.

Did Norvell think that today's game in Boulder, CO needed more hype or did he just think he could push an already well-prepared Colorado team over the edge?

My first wife Nena and I attended a Black church for ten years in the 80's in East Little Rock and I know that Black men love, no worship, their moms.

I've watched Black women, after working a factory night shift, bring their fully scrubbed younguns into church and with one glance tell a 17 year old, 6'4" b-baller to "sit up and shut up."

I'm certain both coach's mothers are extraordinary ladies worthy of double respect, not this bull shit, but, unfortunately this has become the battle of the mothers.

While it's hard to get into Norvell's head, he may be pushing back at Coach Prime's unconventional coaching style and swagger.

After all, Deion's mother told him years ago: "Be you!"

Sander's style as a player and now as a coach, is a total disconnect from the conservative, good ol' boy style of coaching, mentoring, leading.

And, Sanders hasn't had to "wait in line," "pay his dues," "come up through the ranks," to get opportunities, thus, the resentment from those who've "come up"  in the traditional way.

Lest his Colorado Buffaloes somehow let all of this off the field stuff make them uptight, Prime lightened the mood a couple days ago, issuing shades to the entire team, a brilliant psychological ploy.

For those of you who keep up with the sort of thing, game watchers will be drinking Modelo Especial, currently America's favorite beer, not Schlitz, Falstaff or even Lone Star.

Want to watch the game?

Don't head to Folsom Field in Boulder.  You'd have a better chance watching the game at Folsom Prison. As of yesterday, the next Colorado game with remaining tickets is the Arizona game November 11, but those are said to be moving fast.

Watch the game on ESPN at 10 E.T., 9 C.T.
