Tad Hasse and Roman Perez, once the Batman and Robin of the local Republican Party, have both, not only faded into seeming obscurity, but no longer constitute a dynamic duo.
Tad and Roman have parted ways and, unlike the reported split at Dodici's between Trey Mendez and Graham Sevier, the separation has not been amicable.
Gone are the days when Tad-Roman would command a table at Chopstix Chinese Restaurant on Highway 48 and jubilantly finish each other's sentences on the tenets of Republicanism. It's doubtful even William F. Buckley could have kept pace with their rapidfire conservative banter.
The camaraderie disintegrated when Roman felt Tad had betrayed him by not using his pull within the Republican Party to get Roman appointed as a delegate to the state convention.
Tad countered that, despite his repeated efforts to get Roman recognized as a delegate, it was Roman himself who'd burned so many bridges within the party to become persona non grata.
So, Tad went off to north of Corpus Christi, trying to convince farmers to vote him into a position on the State Board of Education, a race he eventually lost to Ruben Cortez.
Roman, finding himself without a political base, took his obsessiveness to the religion of his birth, Catholicism, diving into an intense study of its tenets, ceremonies and traditions, much as he'd once meticulously studied the rules and by-laws of the Republican Party.
In short order Roman knew too much and could not hold back from offering constructive criticism to a local priest who Roman felt was not properly conducting the mass.
The two men got into an altercation in a church parking lot. Roman claimed the priest attacked him and approached Bishop Daniel E. Flores about defrocking the priest, a request that fell on deaf ears.
Now, both Tad and Roman have seemingly taken a lower profile.
We've not heard from Roman since we tired of his calls with made-up accusations against Cameron County Republican Chair Morgan Graham.
We've not heard from Tad since he blocked us on Facebook and other social media most likely in response to something we'd written about Donald Trump.
So, we put out a Facebook APB of sorts, asking rhetorically if anyone had seen Tad.
We post the responses below:
Is Tad Hasse still in town? He and I had a $100 bet on the 2020 election and he hasn’t paid up. He likely thinks Trump will be “restored” to the Presidency in August as he tends to get victimized by the conspiracy theories. After our bet he blocked me from all his social media accounts.
Going to Facebook for news? You once criticized it when another blogger did it! ja ja ja ja
