I can understand why some are cynical about the changes included in the Texas Voting Act.
Many of us in the valley have experienced the politiquera system and what it represents.
There are common sense reforms that could be passed to stop the politiquera practice of harvesting votes from the elderly, including picking up voters in vans from nursing homes and day care centers, that would not have impacted the voting rights of everyone else.
Some of the proposed laws in the Texas bill were actually good, while others were truly suppressive and damaging and should not have been passed.
I have seen so many good candidates lose as a result of cheating and vote selling.
When we did pursue the cases in court, there wasn't a uniform system of punishment with mandatory sentences. Many got off with nothing but a slap on the wrist despite no shortage of evidence. The abuses continued.
There is a way to reform the system by reviewing the cases of fraud that have been convicted, how the practice was conducted, and then modify the law to address those concerns.
While I'm hopeful some good will come of this, it's doubtful they will ever address the system that enables the politiquera vote selling practice as it exists here in the valley, a practice compounded by low turnout.
I'm not saying the Texas legislators were necessarily wrong to leave the state. Some of the provisions were abusive and unconscionable, such as removing people from the rolls based on outdated information.
Patterns of fraud in the RGV are very well documented.
Was compromise truly impossible?
This was an opportunity for both sides to address a long-existing problem in Texas and it didn't happen.
Been awhie since "politiqueras" were active and even a word in Brownsville. Is this woman new to town, and what makes here an expert? Education? Political position?

ReplyDelete5:10 - Just because your head is in the sand does not make reality go away. It is none other than the Chair of the Texas Democratic Party Gilberto Hinojosa who has filed a lawsuit to void ballots cast by politiqueras in the last BISD election. The trial is pending.

ReplyDeleteThere is a status conference set for August. You can follow this yourself. Go to the Cameron County District Clerk page. On the right go to resources. Then at bottom click on portal. You can enter Minerva Pena and look for Leal v. Pena. This is how you stay informed.
