Back in 2016, when Sylvia Atkinson was running for BISD Trustee, I got a call from TSC Board President Adela Garza suggesting I write an article about Sylvia.
"So, you two are friends?" I remember asking Adela, who mentioned that she'd known Atkinson since they worked together at Los Fresnos I.D. and said she would "never forget" the kindness and support from Atkinson when Adela's mother passed away.
I wrote what I viewed at the time as a balanced article, highlighting Atkinson's obvious skill set and platform, but also including this paragraph about her work history:
Atkinson's several brief tenures with various school districts were not without controversy. According to reports, she left the Santa Rosa School District with an $800,000 shortfall. At Socorro ISD of El Paso, there were charges of nepotism when three of her friends from Santa Rosa were elevated over more qualified job applicants. At BISD, while Atkinson was Human Resources Director, her brother Charlie, the former City Commissioner, was hired as a coach over several more qualified applicants, despite not having a teaching degree.
Adela Garza, who's typically complimented anything I've written about TSC or BISD, said nothing about this 2016 article.
Now, with Atkinson charged, but not convicted of one count of conspiracy and seven counts of bribery during her tenure at BISD and Rio Hondo ISD, we begin to get a picture of a self-serving, greedy individual without any genuine interest in the students, but as the indictment states; (using her position) "to obtain money from private companies and private individuals in exchange for assistance in obtaining contracts with BISD or RHISD."
With BISD's annual operating budget nearing $600,000,000, corruption charges do not surprise.
There are also indications that Atkinson did not act alone. Note this statement from Juan Montoya's El Rrun Rrun blog:
At her bond hearing this morning, Magistrate Ronald Morgan prohibited (Atkinson) from having contact with "co-conspirators, co-defendants and victims."
That statement should be extremely unsettling to other BISD trustees.

DeleteAdela thinks that she can manipulate blogs to suit her needs. Whether it's the El RRun RRun, McHale Report or Brownsville Observer, she sheepishly and in a most cowardly way, turns to media to do her bidding. Her ignorance of the public's intelligence is mind boggling and startling to say the least. Instead of being a leader and exhibiting courage and conviction, she hides behind others. I really, really wish she would go back to Washington DSC and disappear. Dumb lady can't even refer to our capital properly, couldn't cite on freaking amendment when publicly asked during her run at Congress and can barely speak English well. I'm saddened by the fact that several thousand students at TSC are relying on her leadership to exist. All she cares about is looking good in front of that TSC camera with her fake pearls. The term pendeja comes to mind when I think of her. I find solace in the fact that some truth will come out of this Atkinson investigation.

ReplyDeleteThe fact that TRUMP continues to obstruct and hide evidence is more proof of how corrupt he is. He knows those tax documents are going to show that he has accepted money from Russia, that he has has been their money-launderer for years - and that he has lied and committed fraud in his tax returns. Innocent people don't try so hard to hide the facts. TRAITOR tRump is a TRAITOR.

ReplyDeleteOh! If Adela is Sylvia’s dearest friend , why not ask you to write another letter defending her?? This is the time when friendships are tested!

Which means that during illness and while in prison, you get to know who your real friends are.
With that said:
Some in the BISD majority were well aware of what was happening between TSC and BISD among other things, just look at the September meeting where they (majority) rammed down the throats of Laura and Erasmo the MOU between TSC & BISD without any further discussion. In fact, I remember the eagerness of Drue Brown and Phillip Cowen to pass this item without ANY further discussion although Erasmo and Laura warned that if they were willing to do it for one (TSC) they will have to do it for others. True!
Another fact is, that on August 27, 2019, TSC announced welding classes which would take place at Veterans Highschool? How did TSC knew it would be approved?? If the September meeting had not taken place yet?
Corrupt people get way to comfortable in their positions and believe they’ll never be caught.....they will!!
These persons have manipulated the system to enrich themselves. They don’t give rats ass about the students, or the employees!! These people have reduced the integrities of both females and males on the Boards, some of whom were once bright attorneys, to now being “yes ma’am” Sad!!
TEA should take BISD reigns, fire the Superintendent, place an interim until the investigations are over, then call for new elections in November. WITH ONE TERM LIMIT for each Trustee. Then and only then, we may take our district, city, and college back, from the hands of these corrupt officials. So help us God!!

This FBI investigation has been going on for the better part of seven years. FBI agents were aware of the shady goings on at the BISD, but the problem was they couldn't find a paper trail to nail anybody to the wall to. So many payoffs were made with promises of jobs and contracts awarded. There aren't a lot of emails that are sent talking about out and out illegal activity. The prize came when they finally were able to pin something on Coach Joe. With all the embezzling and theft he committed during his tenure as AD and as a board member, the FBI had him dead to rights, but I'm sure he was the one who has been offering up people like Dr. Atkinson on a silver platter. Ever notice how Joe Rodriguez was never arrested for all the things he did wrong? The FBI has hundreds of pages and hours of recordings with witnesses outlining how Jor Rod stole from the district, and he never got locked up.
DeleteI'm sure he's the one who got these investigations rolling. He probably turned withess in exchange for immunity. Dr. Atkinson is the first, but she probably won't be the last domino to fall.
What? Seven years, and all they came up with was Sylvia? Nah!!

The FBI never does anything quickly. Atkinson is probably the first of many to go down in flames because of this investigation. Give it time.
