IS CHARLIE CABLER CAMPAIGNING HARDER THAN HIS TWO OPPONENTS?

Charlie and Rosie Cabler
With Trey Mendez at his law office during the day,  Dodici Pizza & Wine and Texas Southmost College at night and Tony Martinez preoccuppied with land deals and CNN interviews, could former City Manager Charlie Cabler just sneak into the runoff?

On a purely political, grass roots level, Cabler has some undeniable advantages over his two opponents:

1. Rosie Cabler:  Attending any Cabler event, you will likely be greeted warmly at the door by Charlie's wife Rosalinda Cabler.  She may even notice you on departure, walk you to your car and thank you for gracing her husband's event.  At least once during the evening she will innocently ask:  "Have I ever told you how Charlie and I first met?"
2.  Older model pickups with Cabler signs:  As a city administrator for decades, Cabler has the loyalty of guys in public works, landscaping and other city departments, not to mention vendors who've done business with the city.  An older model pickup with a Cabler sign might represent, not just the vote of its owner, but the whole family of the man who remembers Charlie for giving him a job or profiting his business.
3.  Campaign Manager P.K. Patel:  Selecting local businessman P.K. Patel as campaign manager was a bold stroke.  Already an event has been held for Brownsville business people of Indian descent, featuring vegetarian Indian cuisine and no alcohol.  The three or four dozen well-dressed souls in attendance at that event will not be voting for Mendez or Martinez.
4.  Variety of Events:  Cabler has not simply held more events, but has varied from the norm with their reach.  Noticeably, Cabler does not linger at events, waiting until the last yakker departs, but, makes an appearance and moves on to the next gig.  When Captain Bob was a no-show for Bobfest, Charlie had a few taco plates distributed and moved on.

How all of this translates is yet to be seen, but Charlie Cabler for Mayor seems to be in good health.

  3. That's hilarious. I don't in no way think Tiger Woods deserves to be awarded the Medal of Freedom, but it's so Trump to hi-jack Wood's moment. It pretty much cheapens the award. If anybody disagrees, I'd really like to know their reasoning. BTW, I'm a Conservative and not a Trump basher, but I question this move. He won a golf tournament, not solved Middle East peace.

  4. Most of the candidates recognize the need for city government to work better for the entire citizenry, to improve streets and sidewalks, and to create and maintain affordable housing. Cabler has a more practical approach to these challenges and a broader understanding of citywide issues than his opponents. He brings experience with the levers of government, having served as city mgr. Cabler impressed us with his thoughtfulness and commitment to ethics and hard work and a fair shake for all. But I lie.

  5. You forgot to picture him with Trump Tea Party nut job Jessica Bradshaw Puente. She’s been to all his events.

  6. Charlie has campaigned like he pledged he would run our city: as a full time mayor. I wish you would be a little more appreciative of this, Jim

  7. You forgot to mention that it rained hard at the beach @ that fishing tournament of Charlie's. Look at the turnout. Amazing.

  8. Very interesting article. I agree, if you think about it, Cabler has been in the city for decades, watching candidates run, win, lose, elected COB officials carried in on a wave of euphoria on the shoulders of cheering friends, then shuffle out on the lonely loser train of election defeat sadness. Cabler has been in attendance at every single political campaign event I can think of. If anyone has observed strategies that work vs strategies that don't, over decades, letting other people raise and spend money while he observes and learns the most effective tricks of the trade. How to raise money, how to prioritize spending it, how to campaign. Not saying I'm voting for him, just that, he clearly is employing what he has learned after many many years of observing political strategy from a bird's eye vantagepoint at the city. There are many candidates who throw money away on stupid strategies, or who target the wrong people (nonvoters) believing that they alone will convince thousands of nonvoters to rise from the comfort of their home and go vote solely because of the power of their candidacy (haha), or who don't want to campaign in person at all and expect a few mailers and phonebankers to bring them all the votes. Has Cabler said anything about the politiqueras as he has surely noticed how many campaigns and candidates in the past decades, would not have been in their seats at COB without them?
Have to say I am impressed with Cablers use of time management and resources, for a first-time candidate he has none of the deer-in-the-headlights panic vibe most do, his apparent expertise in campaigning is highly unusual. And yet, outside the COB does Cabler simply lack the name ID of Tony Martinez and Trey Mendez, who have both been in office for many years, and campaigned successfully before.

When Martinez goes dirty, he goes Real dirty, with that mailout featuring the handcuffs and Ahumada's arrest that went out on Election Day. Too late for Ahumada to respond. Is Tony going to get desperate and do a doomsday Election Day mailout on Cabler's ambulance issue? Is Cabler going to anticipate this and prepare a Casa de Nylon and Tenaska killer Election day mailout on Martinez? After being in the COB so long, Cabler of course knows where all the skeletons are buried and how the sausage was made. Good campaign events can only get you so far when your opponent has been a respected public figure for a decade. Alex Dominguez, despite a good campaign, would never have beat Rene Oliveira had the latter not been arrested in the final leg of the campaign. Scandal is the only reason Oliveira lost, the catalyst. Is Cabler's only real chance to win by exposing Martinez' skeletons, taking down the current mayor and hoping to take Trey Mendez out in a runoff? Will Trey Mendez join Cabler in a last minute mailer takedown of Martinez, leaving the two lesser knowns to battle it out in a runoff? Tune in May 4th to find out, the answers to these questions and more will be revealed, same Bat-time, same Bat-channel....
