WHO WILL MAKE BROWNSVILLE SOAR? SEPARATED INTO "CAN'T," WON'T" AND "COULD"

From the editor: Our mildly anticipated review of the mayoral candidates follows.

It will be succinct.

One candidate has an 8 year track record as mayor. Another has a 39 year tenure as a city employee and a third contender is a known quantity as a college trustee, attorney and business owner.

Oh, BTW.  I happen to know all three.

CHARLIE CABLER

Admittedly, longtime city manager and policeman Cabler was a surprise entry into the race.  His abrupt departure after the private ambulance scandal left the impression he would take his third of a million dollars severance and ride off into the sunset.

Cabler is the quintessential good ol' boy, likable, with a wry sense of humor, dutiful and obedient.

Snatched from the BPD to become an Assistant City Manager despite no actual training for that role, Cabler benefited from our city's insane compulsion to "promote from within," fearing some outsider could come in here and "mess up our game."

Charlie will get a lot of votes.  Look at all the older model pickup trucks in town with CABLER FOR MAYOR bumper stickers, likely guys ol' Charlie gave a job or used as vendors.

Make Brownsville Soar?   CAN'T

TONY MARTINEZ

For the last 8 years Mayor Tony Martinez has given us all the yucky feeling that this is his town, not our town.

Of course, we knew what he was trying to do, buying a bunch of third tier buildings downtown to make sure a substantial segment of the UT-RGV stayed east, but it was a dumb plan and it didn't work, despite $3,500,000 in tax dollars.(Yes, a couple of the buildings have been sold and a couple more are finally finding uses after being off the tax rolls since 2012.)

Yes, during the current campaign, Martinez has been more personable, more accessible.  He was even on the Whine and Cheez podcast recently.

But, it's too late now. . . . .
Make Brownsville Soar?  WON'T

TREY MENDEZ

Trey Mendez is in a position to help.  Being on the forefront of UTB/TSC separation issues, Trey must have learned something about Brownsville's educational needs.

While buying properties doesn't qualify you to be mayor, restoring historic properties and homes gives insight into Brownsville's permitting nuances, good or bad.  Trey might be able to help there, easing the perceived logjam in our city's residential and business permitting.

If Charlie and Tony are old school, Trey is likely new school.  Maybe it's time Brownsville went digital.

  1. As a city manager, your in the mercy of all the city commissioners. You have to, as commissioner jessica says it, “keep all your commissioners happy and they will make you happy”. So it’s not an easy job. And when you don’t agree with one of them, commissioners, because they are out for self interest, then they want to get rid of you, like commissioner Neece was out to get cabler after cabler denied to fire someone in the city because he was banging commissioner Neece then girlfriend.. I think cabler can take this city to new heights and I believe he is the man for this job.. Mendez is a great guy but I think cabler will and could do a better job.. cabler for mayor!!

  2. Trey Mendez cost the taxpayers $13 million with the Lily Tercera lawsuit at TSC. Then he says he would do it all over again. So he didn't learn from his mistake. Would he think and do the same thing if it was his money or his business that had to pay the $13 million based on his vote.
If it was my money I would have voted differently. It's easy to say you would vote the same way if you had to do it all over again because it's not your money. If you make those kinds of decisions at your business you wouldn't last in business very long. But I know you won't make those kind of decisions at your business because YOU would have to pay for it not the taxpayers.

  3. The only thing standing between Trey and the brass ring are $13 million dollars and Adela.

  4. Trey it’s funny how you talk about international trade being one of your main objectives.
Knowing that, that will only impower the port of Brownsville and it’s warehouses such as the once’s leased by the cowens. But again we all should of expected that from you. Since you all are running slait sad to see that. I had you on a different level.
But you are part of that same special interest grups (Galonsky) so sad Trey.
I hope Adela can forgive you for the way you turnd out such a shame.
