ReplyDeleteWhat? No air conditioning?
ReplyDeleteAll i see is paint. Roof is still old and ugly
ReplyDeleteOur downtown has incredible postential, and political differences aside a lot of people have done their best to invest in downtown. At least they are trying. But this picture shows the myth. The core problem is simple - most investors are thinking how can I make money now instead of how can we do this over 10 years? The question is why go downtown? I am sorry to say I shop mostly online because it is cheaper. I do use downtown for my tailor. It is a very very small shop in a corner behind the old federal building, but his work is good. I go downtown for city hall. Charro days is nice, but I am not into crowds. It comes with age. The new bus facility is an A+ for Brownsville and makes us look good. The parking garage is good. There are many good things. The fact I believe downtown can be a bustling business center in Brownsville, does not mean I am going downtown at this time. Oh I park on Levee street when I walk across to Matamoros. I have gotten use to the buses and blend in nicely, so i feel safe.
ReplyDeleteYou know a lot of universities near similar poorly developed downtowns got investors to convert old buildings into condos for staff and students. Dallas managed to get investors to do this which in turn brought in businesses to support the new residents in downtown Dallas, dry cleaners, restaurants, etc. it can be done. The good news is we have a lot of loyal supporters of downtown who are investing in downtown and living in downtown, and politics aside, my hats off to each and all of them.
I do not care who you are, if you are running for city commission I will back you if you will support the lobbying of the state and federal government to build the weir dam for Space X. Short term it means very little for downtown. But long term it is in place and ready to be used once we can get Mexico to understand the ecomomic boom which will come to Matamoros. The drug war will be over soon and the border cites will be safe soon enough. While I will not drive in Matamoros, I feel very safe using public transporation.
This picure reminds me of an old Nixon trip to Moscow. The Kremlin send engineers to survey his route from the airport to the Kremlin. They calculated how far down each street he could see and then remodelled and painted all of the buildings to the maximum point of vision.
I am not against the city working with UTRGV, I am against the way they did it. We honestly need to study the need for condos or lofts in downtown for use by staff and students. We begin there, and from there businesses will come to support the new residents who are spending real money.
Hopefully some day the owners of El Jardin will agree to sell it at a price a long term investor is willing to gamble on. Its history once remodelled will bring business. But we need the owners to lower the price and an investor who sees the long term investment.
To the young investor, you have to think of your investment as retirement. Iy will pay off 10 years from now.
But this merely painting over businesses fronts will do nothing to help downtown.
But I will alsways support anyone and everyone investing in downtown. At least they are trying.
You want me downtown on the weekends. Find an area where we can start a food truck court, hire outide bands or DJ's. make plenty of places to sit, and I will be there. This is something families can do together, and it is good.
Bobby WC
acoustic musicians would be great, but loud, ass DJs, no thanks.
DeleteI just care about family fun, the music does not matter. What ever makes families happy is perfect
DeleteAmazing Renovation. Hope it didn't coat the City more than a couple hundred grand.
ReplyDeleteHats off to the Sportman! At least they made an effort, and put a new coat of paint. Other businesses have looked bad for years and won't do anything to give there business a little TLC face lift. They just care about raking in the money and who cares if Downtown looks like shit.
ReplyDeletehow about replacing that old plywood with windows...or at least new plywood? How about replacing the broken roof tiles? How about getting together with the neighboring owners and painting the building a single color?
ReplyDeleteI like the old one better.
