B.A.M. Wants Reassurance from the City of Brownsville About Reopening As A Music Venue

Subhumans, Potato Pirates and Equinox
From the editor: When Assistant Fire Marshal Raymond Harris shut down B.A.M.'s live music event January 5, based on an anonymous complaint, the group's leaders began organizing fund raisers for necessary monies to bring the building into compliance with fire and city codes.

The group has raised $4,000 so far, but as the update below indicates they want assurances from the city that once they make the necessary improvements, they will be allowed function as a downtown music venue.

Since the City of Brownsville actually owns the building B.A.M. currently occupies, they are hopeful the necessary work on the front entrance will be funded by the city.

Leftover Crack
Nationally known punk rock band Leftover Crack was scheduled to perform January 5, but was forced to move their act to Chapa's Bar on 14th Street when shut down by the Assistant Fire Marshal.

BAM update:

We've had the place measured. We can go forward with sprinkler system , including an additional toilet, but are cautiously slowing the process until we get confirmation from the city that they will update the front facade of the building, the biggest component to us reopening.

The front is key to having a safe entry/exit. The City of Brownsville owns the building, so we look to them. We've been promised since October it would happen and have been waiting ever since. The downtown coordinator and fire marshall are on the same page, but now we must wait for the wheels of bureaucracy to notice us. I've reached out to our district 4 commissioner, at large commissioners and mayor at this point. We don't want to fail you guys. We recognize we provide a vital creative component to downtown Brownsville, the valley and STX and will fight hard to make this happen.

Michelle, Co-Owner of B.A.M.
If you know Commissioners Villarreal, De Leon, Gowen or Mayor Martinez, please let them know how much you miss us.

My name is Michelle, co-owner of Brownville Artists and Musicians, located at 1045 E. Washington St. Our operation is a favorite of the valley and has been recognized by a front cover feature for Festiva Magazine, a Friday magazine special offered by the Monitor, and more recently by The Brownsville Herald for our Wednesday Bizarre Bazaar popup shop. The Brownsville Economic Development Council and Texas Music Office have also recognized our efforts as a positive contributor to the community. My reason for contacting you is because we are at a critical point that requires the City of Brownsville, the owner of our building, to act. We are poised to make improvements to the interior with a sprinkler system and additional bathroom. Unfortunately, we must also rely of the city to expedite the front facade of the building, a task.... approved since last October. Nothing has been done and we are reaching out to you, our elected representative... to give some insight why we are not getting the help we were promised. We feel what we bring to the table is unique and cannot be replicated by anyone. We have laid out the creative infrastructure necessary to help redefine what downtown Brownsville can be, but we really need your help at the moment.

We had projected the reopening of music related events by March, but we don't want to put $4000+ in work if the front won't get repaired like was promised. Thanks for your time.

    1. They're all touring musicians. They already make money from their music. Enough to look the way they do and jealously be judged by you, anyway.

    1. The city owns the building and has had budget approval for the front to be fixed. We have our share, we just want them to guarantee to put their share. How is that lazy? Its better to be prudent in investment lest we get ripped off.

    2. What you do is you fix the problems and then give the landlord the receipts. Chances are the landlord will deduct it next rent payment. You need to fix problems yourself not expect the government to fix them for you.

    3. I expect people to honor their word. That's all. If it wasn't proposed to me I wouldn't be requesting they hurry up. Im doing this knowing that we very well won't be renewed at the end of our lease because the city is looking to house a police substation. The city might reduce our rent for work rendered, but the costs of us putting in couldn't possibly be equitably reimbursed. Foolish as we are, we only did it for the love of this city. Hope and prayer. That's it.

  3. Those guys are my friends from college and have taken and run with a great idea to bring good music and entertainment to our city. I would choose them anyday over the run down facades of the thing they call nightclubs in that area. Keep up the hard work Michelle.

    1. Amen to that! Let's put a cop on duty to prevent any illegal activity from happening in there. Bunch of uppity kids blowing money on stupid things.

    2. Your argument is weak due to the lack of evidence provided. I have attended BAM countless times when I visit my hometown. Although you seem to be generalizing all attendees as being "young girls who get stone and drunk in back." I hold a college degree and have a career. I can pretty much vouch for myself and all the other individuals that support the growing music scene as not participating in these illegal activities you just described. I respect the owners of BAM and what I am about to say does not reflect any of their opinions: I ask you to kindly take your primitive philosophy back to the Stone Age.

    3. I've Djed and attended shows at BAM and can say that it is run very responsibly. The owners are creating a positive space to showcase both local and out of town music and local artists. This space also helps show the youth that all dreams are possible and will give them the courage to create their own art, something that is lacking in the valley and the reason so many "dreamers" leave. The City of Brownsville should be doing everything in their power to make sure that positive spaces such as these are protected and encouraged. I too am educated and have a career in medicine and travel an hour back an forth just to attend or DJ their shows simply for the love of music.

    4. We're not against BAM getting their musical jollies; we just don't want taxpayer money used, that's all. PARTY til you drop! Just pay your own baggage. Brownsville does not need this sort of "outlaw" venue where druggies will arrive and wanton sex will be placed in full display. We're not Austin.

  6. Don't trust the City on that decision. They have their nose up the Union President ass.

  7. Move to McAllen, Harlingen or San Benito, the assholes in Brownsville only work to keep a good project down.

  8. I see the internet trolls are coming out of their holes to try and slime the owners of BAM. Anyone who attempts to improve the quality of nightlife and culture in downtown Brownsville is a target for these nay sayers. I trust our elected representatives who have pledged to revive and revitalize the heart of our city will ignore these unfortunate, jealous, short sighted individuals and see them for what they are. I support BAM 100%, and challenge these negative obstructionists to shed their anonymity and show their faces. I'll bet they all live in the suburbs. I doubt they have the cojones to step forward. 2. Mark Clark wouldn't let these guys in his Galleria 409 door if they carried cash in their hands. Grubby grungers. Wrong town, clowns! Beat it. Scram, you lice-infested ghouls.

  9. We need "Leftover Crack" like we need Barry Manilow. Get some real music and maybe the idea will fly. Recruiting clowns who only look like The Stones or The Ramones is not progress. Brownsville would rather have a Piporro impersonator than these wannabes.

  11. Michelle what needs to be done is you need to organize young adults and engage them in the voting process and vote these politicians out of office . Use your venue to your advantage and sign up new voters . We have the power to change the political makeup of this city and Cameron County

  12. Use this venue for something productive, not for young adults drinking and hanging out on the sidewalk, remember we as a community are trying to clean up Brownsville, there is a lot of criminal activity going on there, and under age drinking, remember it is BYOB, " BRING YOUR OWN BEER" DRUGS AND LIQUOR...

  13. Chapa's bar is a much safer place to hold these events.. ..

  14. Once the place is in compliance their shouldn't be any reason why the city would refuse to allow it to open up the business.

  15. Before this lady started trashing the city did she ever speak to the commissioners at public comment? Did she ever attend a city meeting and address the commission? It sounds like she just wants something free and wants attention. Facebook posts are not effective ways of conducting municipal transactions.
