Lupita Moreno of Holy Family gave a rousing speech about Lincoln Park |
400 delegates from five Brownsville churches attended an "accountabilty" session at Christ the King Church on Southmost Road Sunday afternoon, November 16.
"We have been quiet too long," stated Brother Jason Rossignol, OMI, from St. Eugene de Mazenod Church on Austin Road.
"And look at where that has left us. Our kids walk home from school on unpaved streets or in the mud. Crime is taking over the neighborhoods at nighttime in the colonias because no one can see what's going on. And the city voted to sell Lincoln Park. That is not what we want for our families. . . . We want to see a different city."
Tina Tetecatl: "Are North Brownsville kids different from South Brownsville kids?" |
Various speakers detailed problems that need attention, asking city officials attending for a simple "yes" or "no" answer, not a longwinded excuse. Tina Tetecatl wants to walk to school on a sidewalk on McKenzie Road.
Other speakers addressed lighting in the colonias, repaving streets, a stop light at Minnesota Avenue and Austin Road, neighborhood and park security and other issues.
"We're saying we're here, we know how to organize our neighborhoods, and you need to listen to what the people that elected you are saying. We want the people elected to public office to be accountable to the people of the community," said Maribel Quiroz of the Holy Family Church.
Orlando Rodriguez, Alex Dominguez, Sofia Benavides, Jessica Tetreau |
In a spirited "Call to Action," Lupita Moreno asked: "How many votes did Tony Martinez get last time? 3,000? We need 4,000 this time to make our positions known. We need to 'Remember Lincoln Park!'"
She said that already 1,000 had signed petitions calling for city government to be accountable on Lincoln Park and other issues.
The public officials attending:
County Commissioner Sofia Benavides
County Commissioner Alex Dominguez
City Commissioner Jessica Tetreau
Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez
The little people of the village will do their Life Impulse.
ReplyDeleteNever underestimate the power of
ReplyDeleteValley Interfaith. How can I sign that petition?
"Are North Brownsville kids different from South Brownsville kids?" In a word, yes. They have more money! Please refer this question to millonario Antonio Martinez for a detailed explanation.
ReplyDeleteValley Interfaith HAD "pull" about 25 years ago when they first organized. Guess who was one of the founding organizers? Non other than Juliet Garcia with the then head of Immaculate Conception Cathedral, father Armand Mathew. Ms. Moreno was an organizer at Cameron Park.
ReplyDeleteThe people from Portway Acres and Southmost have paved roads and electricity because of what the people that worked the roads, the neiborhoods back in those days. Commissioner Jessica should look closer in her district. I live across from Price Road and OPI and my street has to bee one of the worst streets in the whole city of Brownsville. It has been reported, there is a case # and NOBODY comes even to patch it up because it has been patched so many times. If you drive down Price Road, the sidewalk going to Hanna HS is full of grass roots, some are small trees with thorns and city workers do NOTHING to clear up the sidewalk. Driving down this morning, I even saw a tire by one of the light poles. City workers dont move a finger if they dont get a "report" from 546-HELP and when you call the number, the poor young man or young lady that answers the phone can only help you up to a certain point. Comissioners show up to these meetings so their name can be counted as present (the mayor doesnt even bother). A suggestion to the comissioners: Do the same thing the students at Pace HS did in their community. BE LEADERS; organize your communities to clean up, get city workers to clean up and patch up bad potholes , get neigborhoods swept , pick up their trash, clean up their areas. Oh, I just wasted a lot of time. That is a Matamoros thing, we are in the U.S., we pay taxes and expect others to do it for us, even if those others are our elected officials that DONT WANT TO HAVE A REAL CONNECTION TO THEIR CONSTITUENTS ONLY WHEN IT IT VOTING TIME >.
Religion is what keeps the poor down. Fighting for a fucking city park while ignoring starving children and families. Yeah, keep flying the goddamn religious flag. Feed the World!
ReplyDeleteHear, hear!
DeleteTony Martinez and his "Tonto" (Rose Zavaletta Gowen) have deaf ears for any public outcry about this issue, on which they have made up their arrogant, egotistical minds. Its a done deal as far as Tony and his United Way elites see it. They pay no attention to the public, because Tony and his "gang" see themselves as superior to us common folk. Tony and his "budz" don't trust anyone but themselves. All the energy of the public is for naught....Tony "The Magnificient" Martines has made up his mind; and his mind is all that counts for him and his administration.
ReplyDeleteFor "anonymous" above, what "flag" would you fly. You surely are opposed to religion, but what are you "for"; anything. Seems like we need other flags to prove to an arrogant mayor that he can't make decisions that affect the public without some public input. Obviously, "annonymous" is an untethered entity that stands behind no "flag".....and can only put down those who try to have a voice. "Annonymous" clearly has nothing positive to offer. Just negative rant.....useless.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that brilliant reply on Anonymous, " Anonymous".
DeleteFeed the poor. Religion keeps this city down. Agree
DeleteIs there an online petition to save Lincoln Park? I googled and couldn't fine one. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOh, it won't be too long before somebody USES the church and religious involvement to run solely on the Lincoln Park issue, hopefully the residents of Brownsville will be smarter than to elect somebody for bitching about one issue,
