Pictures City Manager Charlie Cabler Will NOT Take to Denver to Bid for the All-American City Designation

City Manager Charlie Cabler, the unofficial troop leader for the growing delegation Brownsville taxpayers are sponsoring in the City of Brownsville's quest for a second All-American City Award, will likely not emphasize to Civic League officials our city's designation as the "poorest city in the United States."

Cabler will not show the degradated Stillman House STILL sitting ingloriously in the city's Mitte District, despite Attorney John Shergold's complaint that the building was a nuisance and potential hazard to streams of school children walking by morning and afternoon.  The city, in an incomprehensible demonstration of poor planning has already moved the building twice, once for $25,000 and another time for $14,000.

Another picture Cabler will not be taking to Denver to tout Brownsville as "All-American" is the picture of a homeless couple who have lived for several months under the awning of La Casa del Nylon, purchased for $2,300,000 in 2012, but that remains unused, in decay.

Condition, Owned by Mayor Martinez
Certainly, the City Manager will not take to Denver pictures of a building at 1205 E. Jackson in downtown Brownsville, owned by Mayor Martinez.  Not only has the building's roof has long since caved in, the fence and doors are open, giving the neighborhood's children access to the urine and human excrement covering the floors.

As it turned out, Pete Gonzalez did not suffer any embarrassment associated with placing agenda item 13 before the City Commission that called for "amending" the budget to include $24,120 for the Denver trip. Commissioner John Villarreal came out of executive session obviously coached to include the agenda item in the consent items that pass without whimper or fanfare.  After Villarreal meekly suggested the change, Mayor Martinez and the commission concurred.

The agenda item approving the delegation of 15 to Denver needing a budget amendment did not even get noticed by the public.  Neither will the pictures above be noticed by the jury in Denver selecting the next 10 U.S. cities designated as "All-American."

  1. You have hit a grand slam with this one Jim. Maybe a delegation needs to be sent just to present these pictures. It might open some eyes where they are most needed.

  2. Brownsville is a third world city in every sense of the word, from top to bottom. It is truly ironic that this little wedge stuck between the US and Mexico is such a disgrace. While Mexico, even with all its lawlessness, moves forward, Brownsville moves in reverse. It is like a time capsule you open everyday and it reads the same date, 1875. The local "leaders" are the most pathetic. I sincerely believe that they are so stupid, combined with grandiose narcissism, they are able to convince themselves that they are meritorious.
