Mr. Amigo Association Overlooks McHale's 2012 Debacle, Names the Blogger "Mr. Amigo 2014"

From the editor:  The press release below does not reveal the turmoil on the Mr. Amigo board over this year's selection of blogger Jerry McHale as Mr. Amigo 2014.  McHale still maintains that his bumping of a waiter with a tray of sangria into the Ernie Hernandez, Jr. table was accidental.

McHale himself reassured the association that the salty language used during ceremonies and presentations is history:  "In 2012, I was what, 61, still sort of feeling my oats.  but god damn, I've matured.  With my pending retirement, Social Security and Medicare just months away, the peace of god, whoever he is, has come over me.  I'm not the same man."

Mr. Amigo 2014
In a news conference today in the lobby of the Cameron Hotel, the Mr. Amigo Association announced their selection of Jerry Mchale as Mr. Amigo 2014.   Mchale, a local educator, historian, musician and blogger is a departure from previous selections who have all been Mexican Nationals.
"California's acquisition by the United States under the terms of the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following the defeat of Mexico in the Mexican-American War does not nullify the fact that Mr. Mchale was technically born in Mexico.  His birth a couple of years after the treaty was signed is not a disqualification", stated Michael Garza, the former president of the Charro Days festival.
"The selection was a no-brainer" opined Ramiro Gonzalez, ramrod for downtown revitalization.  No one has done more for downtown Brownsville than Mr. Mchale.  I can't wait for him to lead the gritos."
Channel 4 reporter Ryan Wolf shoved a microphone at Mayor Tony Martinez, who was grinning from ear to ear as he left the Cameron.  "If not Jerry, than who?" was the quick comment from Martinez.
The Mr. Amigo Association issued this brief statement:  "Our vision is to celebrate the shared culture, friendship and family of Brownsville and Matamoros, to enjoy and promote the traditions and history of our two cities and countries.  Mr. Mchale embodies that spirit, not only as an outspoken advocate of our region, but as a role model for our young."

  4. This is too bad because we wont be able to get close to Jerry anymore until Charro Days is over. Mr. Amigo Association will have 15 cops working overtime always around him and won't allow us access to him to even get an autograph from him unless we pay 1200 dollars for a table at the Brownsville Events Center Costume Ball. We will only be able to get a glimpse of him at the parades from a distance... maybe. Caramba!

    1. Actually, one of the positives about Jerry's nomination is that he, like Pope Francis, has the common touch. The pomp and rituals of the office of Mr. Amigo will not stifle Jerry's natural inclination to "press the flesh" of the common Brownsvillian. Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez has made his team aware of the likelihood of McHale stepping out the vehicle and walking along the parade route. It may pose a security nightmare but that's just Jerry being Jerry.

    2. (is that he, like Pope Francis)

Great comparison. You should fix a pic of Jerry (a professed Irish atheist) dressed like the Pope.

  6. Arriba los puteros! This is fabulous news. This is the first serious Mr. Amigo since Cantinflas was crowned in 1965. It was all down hill until now. Now we have the resurrection of unmatched integrity and character in the persona of Jerry McHale. However, I think now is the time to add the commentary side of the award. I nominate Erin Hernandez as this year's Mrs. Amigo. What a fine couple they will make. And, Jerry will get to ride in a convertible for once in his miserable life.

Agree! No one deserves it more than the Irishman.

    2. Most of these Mexican novela stars take the job of Mr. Amigo as a career opportunity in a dingy U.S. border town. They have no real attachment to Brownsville. At least Jerry believes in an promotes the city.

  7. Very true about the Mr. Amigo Association taking tax dollars for their advantage on police officers, the event center, and who else what more . As it is the downtown parking metor might go up to 75 cents. This is where our tax money goes to pay ?

  8. The Mr. Amigo Association is an elitist farce of an organization and the sooner the Brownsville citizens demand accountability on all the freebies in services the city provides for them the sooner we can replace their events with more affordable public engagements the better. They have priced the average person out of their special events. So we give them our tax money to make events that most can't afford. Please tell me where this makes sense. The whole Mr. Amigo selection process and how monies are spent for all the elitist private parties should also be investigated. Another organization pilfering the citizenry of the "poorest city in America"
