Passed Over for Ambassadorship to Mexico, Mayor Tony Martinez Set to Present "Welcoming Remarks" At Bi-National Summit 2013

Brownsville Mayor and Ambassador
At Large, Tony Martinez
Mayor Tony Martinez will have to get up early on Friday December 5 for his scheduled participation in the "Welcoming Remarks" of the Bi-National Summit 2013 to be held at UTB's Gran Salon.  He will be sharing the stage at 8:15 AM with Congressman Filemon Vela, Diputado Carlos A. Garcia and Presidente Municipal(Matamoros Mayor) Leticia Salazar.

This may be the closest Mayor Tony ever gets to his reportedly coveted U.S. Ambassadorship to Mexico. The rumor at the time of Tony's mayoral election two years ago was that his holding at least one elected office was a prerequisite to being an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America.  Part of that evidently inaccurate rumor was that Tony had given $1 million buckaroos to the Barack Obama campaign. Campaign finance reports do show a contribution by Martinez of $10,000 to the National Democratic Party, but nothing close to $1,000,000.

President Obama did have occasion to appoint two different men as Ambassador to Mexico during his first term, neither one of them the Brownsville mayor.  Carlos Pascual, a lifetime diplomat, born in Cuba with an undetermined birth date, served until he got into a public verbal tussle with Mexican President Calderon over the drug cartels, then was replaced by Earl Anthony Wayne, known as "Tony" to his close friends.  Neither diplomat is scheduled to be at this Friday's BiNED or the reception the night before at the Student Union Veranda.

Nearer fruition than the mayor's ambassadorial dreams is his mysterious downtown office.  Just this week three important wall maps were hung depicting city lands, resacas and city districts.

The details about the financials of how the new office at 1101-A E. Washingon St. was leased, renovated and furnished, have not been forthcoming from the City of Brownsville.  We sent our Public Information Request(formerly Open Records Request) via City Secretary Estela Von Hatten back on November 13, then requested a status update December 2.  Here is the City Secretary's most recent response:

Mr. Barton:

Our Finance Department is working on your request.
Depending on the number of pages or staff time to retrieve the information, there may be a fee. As soon as I have determined the fee, I’ll let you know. As soon as I have the information I’ll email it to you.
Thank you.

  1. I would suggest Antonio shoot for Venezuela or Paraguay. Two highly corrupt countries that nobody wants to be ambassador. Our, if he really has some bucks, he could buy the ambassadorship to the Vatican that would match his piety. Being stuck as "alcalde" of Brownsville certainly is the booby prize. Sounds like the Obama boys played a fast one on him. Democrats have a big problem in Texas as their votes are basically useless in a presidential election. And, it will take about 15 years for things to change demographically. Florida, another story. Maybe Antonio could pretend to be a Cuban exile. They show up quite regularly at the Gateway Bridge theses days.

    1. This is simply a reading comprehension issue. Nothing you read in the article above indicated that President Obama promised Martinez an ambassadorship, just that he reportedly hoped for that appointment. You need to try to think things through before posting irresponsibly.

    2. jb your very title states, "Passed Over for Ambassadorship to Mexico, Mayor Tony Martinez..." You need to try not to mislead the 3 readers you have. However, it does not negate the fact that b HUSSEIN(A TERRORIST NAME) obama is a serial liar.

    3. At least you're trying, but still having great difficulty. "Passed over" means simply not selected. It does not mean Obama promised him the job. You simply are unable to connect the dots. No crime. That's why they make the short bus.

    4. jb how do you know b HUSSEIN(A TERRORIST NAME) obama, didn't promised him an ambassadorship? You don't know that for a fact. Dumbocrats don't give "money" without strings attached, there's always a "quid pro quo" involved. Dumbocrats are the most pinches to give to charities, cause there's nothing in it for them, they're only generous with OPM.

  3. I thought this was to happen at Boca Chica beach?

"CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - An unmanned Falcon 9 rocket developed by Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, blasted off on Tuesday to put its first commercial satellite into orbit, staking a potentially game-changing claim in a global industry worth nearly $190 billion a year.

The 22-story rocket lifted off from its seaside launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Base."
