Sign Along Boca Chica Pointing Down Iowa Road |
Visitors flying into Brownsville might anticipate that the airport facilities would be a subtropical jewel, well-maintained, landscaped and lush. It is anything but that as noted by a commenter to this blog quoted below. The Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport needs a landscaping facelift, new signage and some adjacent road repair. North Iowa Road, one of the main arteries into the airport is substandard for rural Mexico, let alone as an entry to an airport in a city of 200,000 north of the border.
This might be a project for the Brownsville Beautification Committee to create a plan. A little creativity, some sweat equity and perhaps a stipend from BEDC could give the airport the cosmetic upgrade it seems to desperately need.

This from an anonymous commenter in the previous article:
"The roads to and from the Brownsville airport and its nearby surroundings are a gigantic eyesore and something to be ashamed about.
First impressions should be taken into account if we would want to attract more business, considering it has the distinction of being classified as "International". But roads full of potholes and surrounding property with extreme lack of landscape maintenance, minimal directional signage and almost no lighting at night make for a lousy impression to first time visitors. Where is the BEDC and GBIC when you need it? Probably dreaming up how many more Titan Tire type industrial parks they can build with our taxpayers money."

Brownsville may be "north of the border," but it's more Mexico than Texas. Deal with it. JMHO
ReplyDeleteThe Airport is an embarassment. Total reflection of the City Commission values. Why use taxpayer money to build an image ? Less money for the Commission to scam from the coffers. Nothing but whoring thieves mind you.
ReplyDeleteThere is no tourism in Brownsville, the only passengers using the airport are locals, and they use it because they did not find flights to Harlingen, so why should the City care about it, it is only locals and locals don't care
ReplyDeleteShut up, idiot. You're a lot dumber than you think.
Deletewhat a clueless comment..
DeleteThe potholes are small compared to the ones on my street, the dry "island" is nothing compared to the dry grass all over the city and mayor and comissioners are "resting" while the rest of the "peons" are at "work". NO LEADERSHIP in this town.
ReplyDeleteOh my god Barton writes about an airport good grief get a life go out dance a little.. Your blog as your distended testicle are a joke no wonder your on everybody's mouths and you don't have any true friends,
ReplyDeleteGo back from the cyst pool you came from.

Jim,
DeleteI think it is your buddy Paz. He likes to feint stupidity, which in his case is a snap.
By the way, relating to the airport, the first international airmail delivery flew out of Brownsville to Mexico City by none other than Charles Lindbergh.
"On 10 March 1929, Lindbergh flew the inaugural flight from Brownsville, Texas to Mexico City via Tampico, in a Ford tri-motor aircraft. However numerous bags of mail went missing for one month, and consequently this became known in the philatelic world as the Lost Mail Flight."

DeleteThat should be "feign," not "feint." PENDEJO. Hack.

the airport is extremely important to talk about you dumbass!
DeleteThe airport is a total embarrassment to the city as is the scenic "view" leading to the airport.
ReplyDeleteGhetto, just ghetto. How can anyone even hope to promote Brownsvlle to investors with a sorry sight like that? The answer is there is no plan to attract investors. Way to go Mayor
"Believe in Brownsville" MartΓnez or whatever your shitty slogan misleading was. I regret the day I cast my ballot for you, but I have learned my lesson.
What the hell is a cyst pool?
ReplyDeleteIt is where someone who is compelled to correct other peoples grammar comes from.
ReplyDeleteA community is judged by its people. It appears Brownsville's residents have a hard time with the English language. I applaud Rey's steadfast desire to help you and the others learn the language. But, then, I hear residents are even worse with their native Spanish, so who knows about this town? You need help.
DeleteSome people need correcting.
DeleteThe airport director (Brown) and his minions refuse to do anything and from what I hear, the person really running the show is Brown's accountant. Brown is very quick to blame the city for having deaf ears to the Airport's needs, but has he tried the county, Chamber of Commerce or applied for any grants lately? He aint doing shit. Lastly, hang out in the rental car area and see how hot it gets. That's because the air conditioning has been out for years. The bathrooms are just warm enough to maintain an ecosystem of resaca insects. That compounded with the substandard facilities affects everything the tourists see. Everyone sees Brownsville as a third world country thanks to everyone involved passing the buck.
ReplyDeleteThe air-conditioning was discussed at the board meeting. The maintenance supervisor mentioned that only 2 out of 4 chillers were operating, so they were at 50% capacity. He did say that he had a purchase order for another chiller and that the main building should be up to 75% of cooling capacity soon.

The City of Brownsville has not chosen to make the Airport a priority. From what I can see it is a miracle what the Airport Director can do with what he gets from the city. The City is busy building Sports Parks, fixing offices at City Plaza and the grants department is busy finding grants for their own interests. Mr. Brown has gotten more then $28 million dollars in Federal Grants and about to get $10 million more for infrastructure and that is just to keep planes landing and taking off. He has worked with GBIC and completed 13 projects which were rebuilding the five parking lots, rebuilding the roof on the Air Cargo building, demolished the old AG buildings in the front of the Pan American Building and build a new building in the Foreign Trade Zone, demolished the old dilapidated maintenance shop and build a new shop in Foreign Trade Zone, completely reconstructed the Terminal roof, etc. They have increased the enplanements in the last ten years from 100 per day to 350 or more per day. A shuttle bus service has been established to the island and surrounding community. The rental car companies have increased from 3 to 6 companies and still expanding. All of the leasable buildings have been leased out with tenants on waiting lists. Have purchased additional properties for future expansion. Planning for terminal expansion has been initiated and is in the works. The staff at the airport if I can recall has not been increased in the last ten years. If you would have seen the Airport ten years ago and see it now significant improvements have been made. It is easy to complain and be negative about our city but there are some people that are really working hard to improve it. I have seen them work hard and make progress where it counts. The city should dedicate more funding and more staff to do landscaping and improvements to all roads leading to it. Give them the MONEY!!
ReplyDeletethat's all great. now the commission needs to do its part and reconstruct iowa. it should be a boulevard with a median up to boca chica. they also need lighting and overhead signage to tell you how to get out of that place since they blocked billy Mitchell off. they also need to cut Minnesota at Norton drive and get all of the non airport traffic out of the airport. how can that be acceptable with all of the homeland security rules?
