(Matamoros, July 25, 2025) During a meeting with the Secretary of Economic Development and Tourism, Enrique Salinas, workers from the construction branch of the Union of Day Laborers and Industrial Workers of the Maquiladora Industry (SJOIIM) explained the current lack of employment they face.
They stated that, due to low labor demand and new labor policies, they have been left out of recent contracts, which has directly affected their family finances.
In response, Mr. Enrique Salinas Garza reported that new projects will soon be coming to Matamoros and indicated that he will seek ways to integrate them, recognizing that the SJOIIM has trained workers with extensive experience.
It is worth noting that our union recently celebrated 93 years of working life, and that the construction branch has historically been a fundamental pillar within the organization.
However, today its members are facing a difficult situation and need to be taken into account to provide a daily living for their families.
For his part, the union's general secretary, Juan Villafuerte Morales, noted that construction workers have participated in most of the projects carried out in the region for decades, and he emphasized the urgency of creating new job opportunities.
