Is Chuck Out of the DA Office, but To Be Named As Alejandro's Replacement in 357th District Court?

Chuck Mattingly

As rumors surfaced about Judge Leonel Alejandro stepping down midterm from his judgeship in the 357th District Court, a local blogger gleefully announced the termination or non-retention of Chuck Mattingly as Cameron County Assistant District Attorney by the newly elected Luis V. Saenz.  Mattingly, like many others who worked in the Villalobos' office will be out of a job as Saenz takes control and brings in his people.

Will Saenz' staff include Carlos Masso, who waged bitter character assassination in the Brownsville Herald against Saenz during the campaign, but joined Saenz in a kiss-and-makeup session at a Democratic political rally before the general election?  Will it include the straight-laced, but reticent Maria De Ford, who, while filling in for Villalobos during his final days was presented with evidence of voter fraud, but chose not to act or even respond?

Saenz himself chose not to distance himself from Ernie Hernandez, Gilberto Hinojosa and the corrupt elements of the Democratic Party.  It is unlikely he will move on any evidence  of election fraud presented by newly appointed Election Administrator Chris Davis.  Davis may have to go to the adjoining Hidalgo County to initiate a restoration of the democratic process and respect for the Election Code to Cameron County.

But one tipster claims that Texas Governor Rick Perry will appoint Mattingly to replace Alejandro in the 357th District Court.  If true, that would be a classic case for Mattingly of landing on his proverbial feet.  Some feel County Judge Carlos Cascos will influence Perry's final decision, if indeed Alejandro resigns.

Another blog commenter disagrees, feeling that Cascos will necessarily recommend an Hispanic to Perry to fill out Alejandro's term:
"Alejandro is a BUM! But, we hear that with the development of the offshore wind farm that has just hit the papers, he can make a lot of money at his old job and with his firm providing workers at AMFELS. AMFELS will be making the towers for the wind farm and that is going to offer Alejandro "beaucoup" money...far more that he would earn as a judge in a lifetime...possibly, if things go as planned. If we look around for Republican lawyers, there is Chuck Mattingly who got into the political fray as a Republican. But, he is an Anglo and that will not help the Republican Party grow in Cameron County. Chances are the Governor wants an Hispanic female lawyer with a family.....either find one locally or bring one in. Carlos Cascos won't appoint a judge, but you can be sure the Gov. will seek his recommendations. If they can't find a female, then an Hispanic male will come into play."

  1. Cascos is part of the corrupt machine that afflicts our poor community. he is Ernie Hernandez's best friend, did not do anything when presented with voter fraud evidence, did not do anything to prosecute Ernie on his innumerable fraudulent activities, betrayed his Republican party by endorsing all the Republican candidates except Raul Lopez, not to antagonized his buddy Ernie. what a jerk , I hope Rick Perry takes note of these

In the first sentence, that should be "burr," not bur. In the incoherent second, it should be "too," not to. And, in the third, things in bureaucracy come "down the pipe," not through.

  2. At issue in Cameron County is the need to build the Republican Party and especially the need to get Hispanics involved with the Republican Party. Having a Republican judge who is Hispanic....would contribute to this growth. I also believe we need a Hispanic as Republican Party Chair in Cameron County. Frank Morris has done little as Chair to grow the Party. Frank is seen as just another Anglo Republican. While Mattingly's selection might encourage more Republicans to enter the political arena, and his selection may be payoff for his campaign against Saenz....we think the Governor would like to find a Hispanic; not tainted by the local Dumbokratic Party, and not a "used to be Democrat", to fill this position. He would like a selection to encourage local Republican Hispanics to come out of the closet and get involved.

  3. From what we hear, Saenz is merely asking all current DA employees to "re-apply"...which could mean that there may be few who lose jobs. Saenz will likely want to bring in his own investigators and administrators, but our guess is that most of the attorney's will be retained. Most of this is to present the illusion of change; not that we can really expect Saenz to "really" change the direction of the office. Saenz is loyal to the Democratic machine of Cameron County and he is not likely to want to upset the apple cart. This re-application process is merely a smoke screen to give the illusion of change.

  4. There is nothing wrong with appointing Chuck Mattingly as 357th State District Judge. All the naysayers need to stop. Yes, it is true Frank Morris has not done much with the leadership with the Republican Party in the past 12 years. His time is coming too!!! Chuck Mattingly got support from Independents, Tea party people as well besides the local Republicans. Does anybody remember when Judge Rolando Olvera was appointed by Gov. Perry in June of 2001? He was a Republican as well and switched parties because Frank Morris does not help the candidates. This would be a good idea and make people know that there is good person who should be appointed and with good reason too!!! Oh, Merry Christmas and Happy New year!
