Tony Martinez Serves As Role Model for Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi

King Anthony XIII
Mayor Tony Martinez and Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi share a remarkable kinship.  Both men won democratic elections but then moved quickly to assume absolute power.

Mayor Martinez serves as a role model for Mursi, instantly assuming kingship just as Mursi wants to become another Egyptian dictator.  In his first City Commission meeting, Martinez took the board appointments right out of two young commissioner's mouths, referring them instead to a shadowy, unnamed board, not accountable to the citizenry.  Two commissioner's districts instantly lost representation, yet were still subject to taxation.

As his protege Mursi would later do in Egypt, Mayor Martinez also moved quickly to stifle, squelch and stymie dissent by blocking the broadcast of public commenters.  Only the royal pronouncements of King Anthony and his court could officially be heard and seen in the Kingdom of Brownsville.

Although Mursi wants to create a new constitution, Mayor Martinez simply circumvents the existing one which calls for representative democracy.  Since City Commission decisions are actually put to a vote, Martinez laid the groundwork for controlling that vote by heavily subsidizing or providing amenities for commissioner candidates that would guarantee a rubber stamp once elected.  One can argue that the results so far have not been without a few dictatorial hiccups, but the effort has been there.  The campaigns of Commissioners Rose Gowen and Estela Chavez-Vasquez were heavily supported by Martinez with a view to achieving a coalition that would sing backup harmony for Martinez.  Gowen particularly has been a dutiful plant with nearly a perfect pro-Martinez voting record.  One almost forgets the sound of her voice unless some matter of public health or a green initiative comes into play.  Melissa Zamora even rented her house from Mayor Martinez and perhaps still does.  All of this was certainly by design.

Debbie Portillo
But, now with Melissa Zamora moving on to challenge the notoriously unprincipled Aurora de la Garza for District Clerk, the mayor has set his sights on another plant to guarantee him control of the City Commission vote, a young twenty-seven year old Debbie Portillo, already neatly positioned in a job with no actual work but a huge title, Special Assistant to the Executive Director of United Brownsville.  Martinez has already given young Debbie an office in the Cueto Building.  Her boss is Mike Gonzalez, who likely is an expert at video games or crossword puzzles, because there is no work done at the nicely appointed office of United Brownsville.  Annually Gonzalez shines his shoes to make appearances at BISD, P.U.B., the City Commission, the Brownsville Navigation District, TSC/UTB, the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation and the Greater Brownsville Incentive Corporation to dun the entities for 25 grand each to finance the do-nothing sham of a think tank.

Martinez is already giving Portillo the Rose Gowen treatment, readying her to replace Melissa Zamora as his personal plant on the City Commission.  Will Martinez subsidize a sea of blue signs to flood the vacant lots, residences and store fronts of District 3 to prove that young Debbie "believes in Brownsville?"  Knowing what we know about monarchies and dictatorships, it will be in District 3 and Brownsville's best interest to block this blatant move by Martinez.  Perhaps businessman Martin Sarkis can be convinced that his city needs him to maintain a balance on the City Commission, preventing the monarchy.

King Anthony Tries His Hand At Gerrymandering

While most of us may view Tony Martinez as a do-nothing mayor, that is not the case.  While he has done nothing for Brownsville, he has worked diligently behind the scenes to promote his own interests.  In addition to setting up Debbie Portillo for a District 3 commissioner run, Tony has tried to gerrymander the other districts in a very self-serving way.  Tony wants to move the affluent Rio Viejo area into District 1 or 4 so that one of his rich cronies could replace John Villarreal or Ricardo Longoria.  He also tried to remove the neighborhood of Jessica Tetreau from District 2.  These are blatant, illogical moves not based in common sense.  It's not about representation, but about control and Tony has shown a flair for manipulation to get what he wants.

  1. I hear Sarquis (the way he used to spell it when he lived in Mexico) and John Villarreal are asking around for two or three females to run together.

  2. Look up Mike Garza's past record JIm. He had problems in the city near Austin where he was Mayor. The guy left the place broke! Check the mess he left behind. Also check the criminal complaints agsainst him in regards to his actions as Mayor...and Tony Martinez wants to make him the next city manager? The guy that is pulling all the stings is Carlos Marin, the Darth Vader of this evil empire.

  3. WHAT'S CLEAR:...Tony Martinez is about as much a visionary as is El Carpintero, although, with apologies to Gertrude Stein, there is no THERE in Tony Martinez. The stubby mayor can't overcome his deficiencies; that is, he wishes to be someone for the ages, but pushes himself to that well-known role of political chump. His deal with novato Congressman Vela fits him. He is a man devoid of anything that would favor the citizenry before it favors him. Tony Martinez is too much like Newt Gingrich and former Mexican Mayor Jose Lopez Portillo. To expect more from him is to expect the absolute stunning. The mind reels thinking about what keeps this Man awake. In all likelihood, that is nothing. He reminds me too much of damned near 95 percent of all Rio Grande Valley mayors, each and every one of them working the Peter Principle to its bones. This guy in Browntown is better suited for inventing novel pan dulce than he is at creating new ways to push the city forward. Tony Martinez is the proverbial decaying speed bump on a caliche Southmost street, utterly unable dream the impossible dream. The guy is strictly Page 2 news. Not a single stab at the spectacular from this alleged public servant. I see Browntown from afar enough to feel the silliness that is the world of Border Politics. If Tony Martinez is the local model of the Egyptian power-grabber then, all, we should crown El Carpintero the best wrestler the world has ever known, bar none. As for Melissa Zamora seeking the District Clerk's job, well, this gal has had her 15 minutes, is my feeling. Clod-hopping political jobs is a career in Brownsville. She's been a city commissioner for how long? She's as qualified as is Juan Montoya, and we all know about Juan's strengths, those late-night forays to those spiritual hangouts on 14th Street. No, sir, Ms. Zamora should retire and call it a day. Public service requires more than simply posing for photos with every clown in town...

    1. Well said! My only hope is that the voters are following this and other blogs in order to stay informed. Because we all know that the Herald would never print the truth!

    1. You are correct. It is Mike Gonzalez, not Mike Garza who heads United Brownsville.

  7. Unfortunately for Brownsville, Tony Martinez views himself as CEO....not a mayor with limited power. Tony is following the Juliet Garcia and Mary Rose Kardenas management style.....choose the candidates and force them into positions which will empower the person at the top to dictate. Tony doesn't know much about diplomacy, so the folks in United Brownsville (a Juliet Garcia styled organization) are using their influence and money to select, not elect, city leaders....to be managed by Tony...the CEO. Behind, or pushing, Tony is Juliet Garcia and her gang of thugs. Juliet is the Queen and now Tony has been brought along to be King of Brownsville. AND...Jim, it is Morsi, not Mursi in Egypt.

  8. Debbie isn't with UB anymore, Jimmy. She has a jewelry store at the mall now. It's called Portillo Chic, wonder if it's affiliated with Portillo Jewelry or the Portillo jewelry family?

  9. Debbie is still with United Brownsville. The Portillo Jewelry is her Mom and Dad business. Her parents have had that business for a long time.

  10. Hey Barton, Sarkis cannot beat Portillo. He does not stand a chance against a Martinez/Marin opponent. But there is no need to fear, Ruben O'Bell is throwing his name in the mix. He can beat Sarkis and Portillo toghether. If you do not want another Mayor puppet get behind O'Bell. Sarkis cannot win.

  11. Well I must say.... she is hotter than Zamora! That said, how is she qualified to be a city commisioner? Being hot qualifies you to work at Stilletos not be city commisioner. King Tony will have his band of peasants vote him out soon enough.

  12. What qualifies this lady to be a city leader? We already have enough ladies on the commision that do not have a clue of operating a city! Enough is enough with voting no nothing women to elected positions. Then we wonder why Brownsville is where it is. Martinez and Marin just want another no nothing Bimbo like Estela Chavez and Jessica Tetreu that are clueless and lift their hand when they are told. Ya basta!

  13. Ruben O'nell has to be considered the fron runner in that race,...I agree htat this Martin Zarkis fellow does not stand a chance. He should stick to whatever he does and stay out of running for office. Save your money man.

    1. Forgive my ignorance, who is Ruben O'Bell? Is he like Maclovio O'Malley, a Mexican with an Irish last name?
I will vote for Melissa Zamora and Ruben O'Bell.

    3. O'Bell is a wanna be politician. Thinks because he's a barrio boy "involved" in politics with the Lucio's that he has the political backing he needs. Step outta the shadows big boy and find for yourself.

    1. In her eyes, Melissa Zamora is on an upwardly-mobile career path. Sadly, it is a self-serving journey, for, as we have come to know, she really has nothing special to offer. District Clerk will only lead her to the county commission, to a stab at a state rep./senate post, to even taking a shot at the U.S. Congress. That's the path she wishes for, but we all know that this party girl's past is too much the Laughing Novela of Browntown.

    2. We need to start electing people that are intelligent not popular. Conrado Cantu was popular and look at him now. We allowed the politiquera team to give away 2 races. Erin and "Aweful" Abelardo Gomez. One is an idiot the other a dope protecting theif. We MUST change things for the future of our chidldren and vote with their future in mind.
Electing Zamora for Clerk would be ludicrous at best.

    2. You're part of the problem rather than the solution... Simpleton... Sure let's keep propping up the career of someone with no business acumen. Idiotas, we need bus. people to step up and make a difference. Until we clean up our election process this will not happen!!

  16. I am always amazed at our elected officials, they do a rotten job at their position and have the nerve to keep running for higher positions, like Cascos who pretended to be Secretary of State, like Martinez who wants to be Bassador, like Ruben Cortez etc. Melissa has proven to be nothing but a puppet, yet aspires to be the next County Clerk, maybe now that Roger is not going to be there to manipulate elections we can have some new people with the desire to do something for our community not like the self serving bunch that we have right now

  17. Try and see if you can get through a business conversation with her. She has no clue what she is doing. Zamora that is. Maybe since this Portillo gal has a small business and her family has owned a small business, she might be a good choice. I haven't met her yet but I only support people that are intelligent. Most of our races are between 2 dummies. One can only hope we get people with more than a double digit IQ running.

  18. Twenty years ago, I would have considered taking a cut in pay to run for public office and serve my community. Why don't I do it now? This is not my community anymore. I lay no claim to the scum sucking parasites that infest my town, my county, my school board, my frontera! I'm not talking about attorneys; I am talking about the people that lack morals, family values, decency, and that will fornicate anyone that gives them a chance if the price is right! I won't waste my time with a list of people that fit the bill; we all know who we're talking about!

    1. Why do you think all of our smart kids leave and don't return. Our elected officials act as if we're in Northern Tamaulipas. This shit begins with politiqueras and ends with folks like the Hernandez', Masso, Gomez, the Andrades and Becerra. Look around folks. Our biggest damn business is La Pulga "flea market" followed by taquerias. We have the poorest county in the nation with the highest per capita rate of diabetes. We MUST change!
